Restaurant Orana is home to Chef and Owner Jock Zonfrillo’s intimate dining room where he uses Indigenous ingredients to showcase Australia’s modern gastronomic identity.
Having been awarded Australian Restaurant of the Year 2018 and 2019 has helped us give Indigenous foods and culture more awareness and recognition, and shift the mindset around the acknowledgement of just how special the oldest surviving culture in the world is, and it’s right here on our doorstep.
For the past years we’ve been thinking and working with Elders on country to give their culture a voice through food, and a meal at Restaurant Orana is an insight into those shared learnings.
Dining at Restaurant Orana is a journey through at least forty seasonal Indigenous ingredients that Chef Jock Zonfrillo has curated into our 16-course Tasting Menu of snacks, mains, dessert and petit fours.
Our produce is sourced directly from communities who wild harvest the land, coast and waters of Australia. You will be tasting seeds, fruits, nuts, trees, shoots, shellfish, honey, ants, seafood – all the flavours and textures that represent this beautiful country we live in.
We also offer the choice of a shorter 10-course menu for lunch on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays and happily cater to all dietaries and preferences
Jock Zonfrillo is the Founder of The Orana Foundation, an Australian charity established to preserve the rich food culture of the First Australians.
“It’s heartbreaking for me to think that during my lifetime Indigenous Australian language and culture is in danger of being completely wiped out. That the last 60,000 years of passing cultural knowledge from one generation to the next is in jeopardy. That’s why I started The Orana Foundation, preserving this culture and having more people recognise and consume Indigenous ingredients that directly benefit communities is my life’s work.”
Current Foundation projects include our first Community Packing Shed being installed in Nyul Nyul country in the Kimberley in May 2019, and our Indigenous Food Database reaching 1500 ingredients and counting.
